Park County Public Libraries Newsletter
Libraries with Altitude
2009 Newsletter
From the Director
Many Thanks to the Friends of our Libraries in Park County.
Our libraries thrive with great staff and a supportive community but they BLOSSOM with the help of our Friends. Each library, Bailey, Fairplay, Guffey and Lake George, has its own Friends group and they fortify the libraries with their enthusiasm and volunteerism.
The Friends take care of the gardening and landscaping, shelving books, processing the new books, writing grants, painting, repairs and some maintenance. They help with outreach in the community. They organize or assist with programs. They are awesome at fundraising in lots of ways that are both creative and “tried and true”.
The Lake George Friends have completely remodeled the interior of the library. This included the purchase of new bookshelves, taking the old shelves and setting up the new ones. They rescued a 1904 antique circulation desk from Colorado Springs, painted the walls, installed new computer workstations, moved a ton of books and even remodeled the restrooms with new fixtures, curtains and paint.
The Guffey Friends are in the process of providing a new 24’ x 24’ addition. They have raised all of the funds for the addition and will be providing the volunteer labor for the installation of insulation and drywall, and painting the interior. It has been a labor of love for many of the folks in this small community.
The Fairplay Friends are adding to the new library coffers everyday with book sales, an art show/competition fundraiser, the sale of anything “Judge”, and a dinner at the Como Depot. But they also support the programs too with funds for Summer Reading, purchase of DVDs, and children’s “fun days”.
The Bailey Friends have been busy repairing their book sale shed. They have also contracted with CCCD (Colorado Center for Community Development) to provide plans for possible renovations of the existing space at the library. They have paved the upper parking lot with grant money and donations. They continue to support the summer reading program, children’s programs and purchase audio books.
These are just a FEW of the many ways that the Friends of the Libraries here in Park County support the library and the communities.
